Perpetual Profession of Bro. Nelson, SSS

On October 23, 2024, St. Thomas’ Church, Matale, was filled with joy and reverence as the Perpetual Profession of Bro. Nelson, SSS, took place in the Province of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, Sri Lanka.

The Eucharistic Celebration began at 5:30 PM, led by Rev. Fr. Justin Chawkan, SSS, Provincial Superior of the Province. He was joined by numerous SSS priests from various communities and religious representatives from the Claretians, Good Shepherd, Daughter’s of Eucharist congregations and Holy Cross congregations.

During the homily, Fr. Justin reflected on Pope Francis’ message from the Year of Consecrated Life in 2014, emphasizing three key attitudes essential for a holy and meaningful consecrated life: to be brave, to be joyful, and to live in communion. While acknowledging human imperfections, he reassured everyone that the Lord’s grace and love provide continuous support. Fr. Justin underlined the importance of living a life rooted in prayer and the Eucharist—spiritual treasures inherited from St. Peter Julian Eymard, the Congregation’s founder. These practices, he said, serve as a vital source of nourishment and growth for lifelong commitment, just as branches draw strength from the vine.

The most moving moment of the ceremony was when Bro. Nelson declared his obedience to the Church and the Congregation. He then made his Perpetual Profession by reading the formula and signing it. To mark this profound commitment, he was presented with the Congregation’s ring, followed by the fraternal “kiss of peace” from all present SSS members.

The celebration concluded on a high note with a fellowship gathering and a shared supper, fostering community and gratitude.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to Fr. Roger and the Matale community, along with Fr. Sagara and the Scholasticate community, for their thoughtful organization of the event. Special gratitude goes to Fr. Sunil for coordinating the Preparatory Program for Perpetual Profession (IP4).

Acknowledgment is also due to Fr. Rudsend, SSS, Provincial Superior of the Philippines; Fr. Hans, Scholastic Director in Belgium; and Fr. Peter Jayakanthan, SSS, Provincial Superior of India, for sending their students to join Bro. Nelson in this significant journey. Special appreciation is extended to Fr. Philip Benzy, SSS, who, representing the General Council, addressed the group via Zoom during the final evaluation and commissioning of the P4 program on October 11.

We extend our warmest wishes and prayers to Bro. Nelson as he embarks on this profound chapter of his religious journey.

Fr. Marcus, SSS.
