Celebrating 50 Years of Eucharistic Dedication: Rev. Fr. Ignatius Saverimuttu, SSS

As the Blessed Sacrament Religious in Sri Lanka, we joyfully celebrate the golden jubilee of Rev. Fr. Ignatius Saverimuttu, SSS. His 50 years of dedicated service to the Eucharistic Lord and His people reflect a life shaped by faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment. This milestone is a testament to a journey transformed by God’s abundant grace.

Humble Beginnings

Fr. Ignatius’s journey began in the tranquil village of Thannamunai, where he was born into a devout Catholic family. The son of Ilayathambi Saverimuttu and Santhia Soosaiamma, his early years were marked by both blessings and challenges. Tragedy struck when he lost his father at the tender age of five, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings single-handedly. Her steadfast faith and tireless efforts instilled in young Ignatius the virtues of perseverance, devotion, and an enduring trust in God.

He attended St. Joseph’s School, completing his education up to the 8th grade. Despite facing academic difficulties, his spiritual foundation, nurtured by his mother and the parish community of St. Joseph’s Church, remained unshaken.

Answering the Call to Serve

A pivotal moment came when Bishop Ignatius Glanni, S.J., recognized the potential in young Ignatius and sent him to South India for a two-year catechetical course. Upon returning, Fr. Ignatius began serving fervently in the parishes of SorriKalmunai, Muttur, and Thandavanvalli for seven years. It was during these years of dedicated service that his call to religious life became unmistakable.

In response, he joined the Blessed Sacrament Congregation, committing himself to 15 years as a religious brother. His zeal and dedication were further nurtured when the Congregation assumed responsibility for St. Thomas’s Parish in Matale in 1984.

A Journey to Priesthood

Under the guidance of Fr. Alfred Alexander, Fr. Ignatius embarked on a theological journey with the approval of the Australian Province. Years of study and prayerful discernment culminated in his ordination to the priesthood on August 3, 1991, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his ministry.

A Life of Faithful Service

Throughout his ministry, Fr. Ignatius has served in diverse roles that exemplify his dedication to God and His people:

  • Pastoral Ministry: At St. Philip Neri’s Church and St. Thomas’s Parish in Matale, he provided for the spiritual and sacramental needs of the faithful, bringing them closer to the Eucharistic Lord.
  • Formation Ministry: As an Aspirant Director and later a Scholasticate Director, he guided countless young men discerning their vocation to religious life, dedicating seven years to forming future leaders of the Church.
  • Global Mission: His ministry extended beyond Sri Lanka to New York, where he served as a hospital chaplain for two years, offering spiritual care and solace to the sick and suffering.

Today, Fr. Ignatius continues his mission of prayer and witness at the Matale Novitiate House, embodying the Eucharistic spirit that has been the hallmark of his life.

A Life of Gratitude and Dedication

Looking back on his remarkable journey, Fr. Ignatius attributes his accomplishments to God’s providence and the unwavering support of his family, mentors, and religious community. His 50 years in religious life stand as a powerful testament to the transformative strength of faith, the sustaining power of the Eucharist, and the deep joy found in serving God’s people.

As we honor Rev. Fr. Ignatius Saverimuttu, SSS, on this golden jubilee, we give thanks for his unwavering dedication and inspiring witness to the love of Christ. May his life continue to inspire others to embrace the call to serve with faith and devotion.
