St.Francis of Assisi Church Tangalle

St. Francis of Assisi Church in Tangalle is located in the Diocese of Galle, Sri Lanka. Situated just 150 meters away from the picturesque Tangalle Beach, the church holds a significant presence in this coastal town. Tangalle itself is predominantly a Buddhist area, making the presence of St. Francis of Assisi Church even more noteworthy.

The church serves as a spiritual haven for the Catholic community in Tangalle, which consists of approximately 90 families. It is a place where these families come together to worship, celebrate sacraments, and deepen their faith.

The mission of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation started in the Tangalle parish in 2015. The first parish priest, Fr. Sudath, along with the assistant parish priest, Fr. Samitha, began their service. In 2016, Fr. Sudath built two side chapels, and in 2018, he constructed prayer houses for the substation. Fr. Chaminda, the second parish priest, renovated the mission house. Between 2015 and 2022, Fr. Samitha, Fr. Sajeewa, and Fr. Marcus Codipilly served as assisstant parish priests at different times.

Currently, in 2023, Fr. Anthony Marcus serves as the parish priest, and the assistant parish priest is Fr. Thilina Lakshan. They continue the mission of St. Francis of Assisi Church, guiding the Catholic community in Tangalle and nurturing their faith.
