Blessed Sacrament foundation in Sri Lanka

It was May 20th , 1956 when six religious of the Blessed Sacrament Order sailed into the port of Colombo. Their arrival was at the invitation of the then Archbishop of Colombo, Thomas Cardinal Cooray, OMI. Naturally, they were accommodated at the archbishop’s house in Borella.
These SSS Religious had been commissioned to implant the charism of our Holy Founder in Sri Lanka. This was a grace that they had received, for the Order has now flourished on this soil for fifty-seven years. The first exposition was made on August 1 st 1956.  It was the 100th year of our Congregation and also a centenary since the foundation. The pioneer missionaries to Sri Lanka were, Rev. Frs. Patrick Fitzerald,SSS (from Australia) Henri Pollini,SSS (from Italy) Jim Poyerd,SSS (from the United States) and with them were two Australians; Bros. Stephen Mckenna, SSS and Kevin Gallagher, SSS who were later ordained priests.   Mention must also
be made of the two other Australians who have served so many years in our country, Fr. Lawrence Sullivan,SSS (1956) and Bro. Geoff Campbell ,SSS (1957).
The Congregation’s Mission Statement focuses on rekindling their passion for the Eucharistic mission through the celebration of the Eucharist, adoration, and inner healing. They aim to bear witness to the life of Christ through personal commitment, authentic communion, joyful living of the Word of God, sharing their charism with the laity, and becoming Eucharistic missionaries.

Mission Statement 2022-2026

Inspired by the experience of our Founder’s gift of self, and being part of the Eymardian family, we embrace the universal nature of our Congregation as we journey together with the whole Church with synodal mentality:

“1. To be a gift of self to God and humanity by witnessing to the Eucharistic spirituality and promoting prayer and community life as part of our mission.

2. And to share our charism with priests, religious and lay faithful.

Remembering Brother Michael: A Legacy of Love, Laughter, and Devotion (15/08/2021)

Birth: 07.02.1940
Profession 15.08.1962
Death: 15.08.2021

As we commemorate the second anniversary of Brother Michael’s passing, his legacy continues to shine brightly in our hearts and memories. Brother Michael’s life was a true reflection of the love espoused by Saint Peter Julian Eymard and exemplified by Saint Philip Neri. His devotion to the Eucharist, which he shared with all, was a testament to his deep spirituality and commitment to serving others. As a dedicated lector and organist, he enriched our liturgical experiences and brought us closer to the divine.

Beyond his religious duties, Brother Michael’s playful spirit and mischievous sense of humor endeared him to everyone he encountered. The laughter he evoked and the practical jokes he played were a hallmark of his warm and welcoming nature. His presence in the Pettah church, intertwined with peals of laughter, remains an indelible memory.

Brother Michael’s impact extended far beyond the walls of the church. He was an ambassador of hospitality, welcoming all with a spirit of charity and kindness. His dedication to the Congregation and the people of Sri Lanka continues to inspire us, even in his absence. As we remember him on this anniversary, we are reminded of his likable character, his grace, and the enduring gift of his memory. Brother Michael’s journey of service, which he embarked upon in the Pettah, left an everlasting imprint on us all. As we celebrate his life and legacy, we honor a cherished friend who touched our lives with his unwavering faith, joy, and profound kindness.

On this 2nd anniversary of his heavenly birth, we pray for the repose of his soul. May he rest in peace!
